2009 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva, Puglia, IT
Our Price: $12.00

It's a big deal to win Italy's Tre Bicchieri award.

Typicall
y, the recipient of this prestigious designation is the top winery's best bottling.

And yet, we're writing today about a rare opportunity, indeed.  Cantele has been a favored producer of ours for years, reliably producing rich, punchy southern reds based on the Negroamaro grapewith lots of flavor and personality.  We couldn't be happier to see them awarded for their great efforts at all price points.

But seriously.  Tre Bicchieri for $12?
Do you have a truck?  Back it up.
No room in the cellar?  Build another.
This is ridiculous value.
The wine arrives at the end of this week.

2010 Puig-Parahy "Georges" Cotes-du-Roussillon, France
Our Price: $15.00

"I make 10 different wines. This is my favorite red, so I put my name on it. It is from 60 to 80 year-old vines that we hand pick in the Pyrenees foothills, near the Spanish border."
-Georges Puig

Treasure Island-based importer Chris Terrell brings us this astounding value from the French Pyrenees. Lovers of reds from the southern Rhone Valley will find a familiar friend in this old-vine blend of Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah, but "Georges" has enough fruit, complexity, and depth to appeal to any palate. It's one of the most impressive reds from any country we've recently tasted.
Seriously.

From The Critics
David Schildknecht, The Wine Advocate: The Puig-Parahy 2010 Cotes du Roussillon Georges - about to be bottled when I tasted it - offers its usual exuberant, infectiously juicy, impeccably-clean...fruit, reflecting a blend of Carignan, Grenache, and a smidgeon of Syrah, raised in tank. Blackberry and purple plum are tinged with brown spices, bittersweet herbs, and peat-like smokiness. Given the pricing of past vintages, we can expect that this 2010 rendition of "Georges" will once again offer outstanding value over the next several years.

Our Tasting Notes
Tasted over four straight days, this old-vine blend of Carignan, Grenache, and a touch of Syrah was captivating until the very end. The smooth, concentrated flavors of sundried blackberry and kirsch remind us of what you'd expect to find in a pricier Vacqueryas or Sablet. Earth, black and white pepper, thyme, meaty notes, and violets add great complexity to the wine's core of luscious fruit. I doubt I'll come across a more interesting $12 red any time soon. I found that the wine really opened up after about 30 minutes, so try giving it a good swirl in a carafe or decanter. This will easily drink well for another 6+ years if stored properly. -Brent

Tayerle "Troubadour" Red Blend, California
Our Price: $15.00

The Tayerle Old Vine Pinot Noir has been a cult favorite wine for years.  Even if you can't pronounce the name, you're coming back for more.

With his newest offering, "Troubadour", Oakland-based winemaker Loren Tayerle has thoroughly outdone himself.  This man is the king of Californian bang-for-the-buck.

The Troubadour has been a long-evolving and ever-more-intriguing blend that has settled on a core of rich Syrah, earthy Mourvedre and a jolt of old-vine juiciness provided by the rare Valdigue grape.

It's an ideal summer red that combines California's sunny ripeness with a touch of old-world backbone.  Think of a hypothetical blend of a Cotes-du-Rhone and a Sonoma old-vine field blend.

It's flat-out delicious and stellar value.
Just another slam-dunk from Tayerle.
How does he do it?

A wine this good should command $25 a bottle.

Instead, it's just $15 and
$12.50/btl on a case or more.

You know the story by now....Back in 2006, we sold the entire production of the first vintage of Central Coast Pinot from local winemaker Loren Tayerle.  The wine was impossible to keep in stock, because it combined luscious old-vine, single vineyard Central Coast Pinot with a paltry pricetag.  Case after case walked out the door.

Every year we buy everything and it sells out in six weeks.

Here's where a new chapter gets written.

For the holidays, Loren has agreed to sell us his awesome Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir for just $16/bottle and $14.40/bottle on a case, you simply can't find a better bottle of Pinot Noir anywhere near this price.  Load up.

Based in Oakland, Loren became known to us as the man making the great Pinot Noirs at Verve.  His Russian River Pinot is a cult favorite at our stores.  We learned that he had earned his stripes at David Bruce and Rosenblum and also that he had his own micro-garagiste label.  We tasted his wines and couldn't believe how much value they offered. Great flavor, lots of spice and enough substance to hold the wine together for a few years in the cellar.
It was a dunk.

2007 Snow's Lake Cabernet Sauvignon "ONE", Lake County, California
List Price: $37.00
Our Price: $16.00
You save $21.00!

We’ve stocked a few wines in the past that we knew were too good to be true (‘04 Esoterica Touriga, '07 Eaglepoint Coro). In this case, local winemaker Peter Molnar suggested we take a look at this epic mountain Cabernet Sauvignon made by David Ramey. It's quite possibly the best Cabernet ever made in the Red Hills of Lake County. Just north of the Napa Valley in the rugged ridges of the Mayacamas range—2000 ft, red dirt, powerful fruit. With customers like Stag’s Leap and Cakebread, SLV is a primo Cab vineyard. It’s not often that we can offer this caliber of wine for $16. This is an age-worthy mountain Cab that will drink superbly for the next decade. Oddly, the stated 15.45% seems a point high. Our guess is 14.5%. Back up the truck.

2010 Sonoma Oaks Pinot Noir
Our Price: $16.00

Balletto Vineyards has long produced ace Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay from their Guerneville Road property in the heart of Sonoma's Russian River Valley. They focus mainly on estate bottlings, but because they have so many vineyards, they needed a way to use up extra fruit from each harvest. Enter Sonoma Oaks. A blend of various sites on their property, it's the same grapes and same winemaking that goes into their higher-end wines at a fraction of the price. We've stocked it for years and feel like it's one of the absolute best values in California Pinot Noir─anywhere.

Sadly, we're down to our final 25 cases of the excellent 2010 vintage. This is last call for legit Russian River Valley Pinot Noir priced for everyday drinking. Balanced, juicy, luscious, and easy to love, with that unmistakable Russian River Valley perfume and texture.

2012 Commanderie de Peyrassol Côtes de Provence Rosé
Our Price: $21.50

The 2012 Peyrassol Côtes de Provence rosé possesses all the characteristics that make pink wine from this corner of France world-renowned. White peach, watermelon, orange zest, and strawberry dance in the glass, with a crisp but silky texture and enough chalky minerality to balance all that lovely fruit. We like Bandol rosé as much as anyone, but Peyrassol goes toe-to-toe with those storied (and expensive!) bottles and more than holds its own.

As with all traditionally-crafted Provençal rosés, Peyrassol is dry as dry can be and pairs incredibly well with a wide variety of foods, from salmon to roasted chicken, fresh fish to creamy cheeses, pork tenderloin, charcuterie, and on and on. It has all the light, refreshing qualities of a white wine with enough texture and red fruit to truly make it one of the most versatile wines you can drink during the spring and summer months—and beyond.

We've long enjoyed the soulful wines of Château d'Or et de Gueules proprietor Diane de Puymorin. We've stocked her delicate Provençal rosé year in and year out, as well as her Syrah-based Cuvee Trassegum, a full-bodied red that captures the best of the Rhône with a Costières de Nîmes accent. But it's her top wine, a bottling of 100+ year-old-Mourvèdre known as La Bolida, that left us starstruck. Never before have we tasted such a pure, luscious, & dense expression of this famous Provençal grape. This might be the best Mourvèdre we've ever tasted.

Deep, pure, black-hued fruit? Check.
Full body, smooth texture, incredible aging potential? Check.
A nice trim of expensive and subtly-integrated French oak? Check.
100+ year-old vines cropped at an absurd 10-15 hectoliters per hectare? Check.

We recommend snapping up this Mourvèdre as it is clearly one of the best examples of the grape from anywhere in the world, and the kind of wine that will surprise and delight both California & French wine lovers alike.

Say what you will about Robert Parker, but his knowledge and enthusiasm for all things southern French is typically spot-on. Here are his thoughts on the 2009 La Bolida:

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate: 91-93 points
With the exception of La Charlotte, all of the [chateau's] wines carry the Costieres de Nimes appellation, and they represent some of the finest wines of that appellation. They are all bursting with the essence of Provence in their spiciness and exuberance. The 2009 La Bolida is outstanding as I expected. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of blueberries, blackberries, roasted meats, bouquet garni and melted asphalt. This complex, rich, full-bodied, solidly made effort possesses excellent ripeness, but none of the rusticity or kinkiness that Mourvedre can sometimes exhibit. Drink over the next decade.

Sadly, we have only a small supply of this wine. It is in-stock NOW and available for tasting at our College Ave. & Vine St. locations.
2004 Reinhold Haart Riesling Spatlese, Ohligsberger, Mosel, Germany 750ml
List Price: $40.00
Our Price: $40.00

Recommended for the house made cheese and peach courses. One of the quiet stars of the Middle Mosel is this 600-year-old estate in Piesport, which is known for the exotic character of its Rieslings.  This particular site is located in the village of Wintrich, and produces racy, full-bodied Riesling with bright flavors of peach, pear and pink grapefruit.  The cool 2004 vintage lends this a refreshing spearmint note.
2005 Francois Pinon Cuvee Botrytis Vouvray, Loire Valley, FR 375ml
List Price: $43.00
Our Price: $43.00

It seems like there's nothing Francois Pinon can't do with his organically-grown Chenin Blanc grapes.  From bone-dry whites from a variety of soil types to beautifully aromatic sparkling wines, he's something of a Vouvray visionary.  It's no surprise that his late harvest dessert wine made in the style of Sauternes is as gorgeous as it gets - aromas of honeysuckle and wildflowers lead to an unctuous, mouth-filling tasting experience few other wines in the world  can match.  And with the acidity still this bright, I'm envisioning a 25+ year life-span for this epic bottling. (Greg)
Voirin-Jumel Brut Blanc de Blancs, Champagne, FR
Our Price: $44.00

Voirin-Jumel is a grower-producer in Champagne, meaning this family grows, harvests and bottles their artisanal bubbles with no outside meddling.  Small-batch, high quality, low price.  The way it should be.  This delicious Champagne is imported directly in the Bay Area by intrepid local Charles Neal and it should replace that orange label on your table from here on out.

*******
What do we mean by old-school Champagne?  Well, this is the kind of Champagne that James Bond would have enjoyed - rich and flavor-packed, with a combination of dried fruits and brioche notes, singing acidity and effervescence and a long, balanced finish.

A lot of the quality of Voirin-Jumel comes from the great vineyard land they own.  They're based in the village of Cramant, a Chardonnay-only enclave that has white, chalky soils that drain well and reflect heat back onto the grapes, which synthesizes precise, mouthwatering citrus with luscious apple and apricot.  Voirin-Jumel typically blends two vintages together in this bottling and the added year often provides some pleasing notes of maturity.

Sadly, we only have a small supply of this wine for the upcoming holiday - it arrives on Wednesday and once gone, will be unavailable until April.

2005 Radikon Ribolla Gialla, Friuli, IT, 500ml
List Price: $45.00
Our Price: $45.00

Recommended as an adventurous pick for the tomatoes and egg courses. When asked how he made such unique and impressive wines, Stanko Radikon replied with a shrug, "It's how my grandfather made wines in the '30's." Retro wines from the northeastern zones of Italy have a futuristic feel to them because they've been forgotten. Skin contact deepens their hue, prolongs their lifespan by years, and results in surprisingly complex aromas and flavors. Among the wines in this rare style, Radikon's stand out for brilliant acidity and compatibility with food. This special "orange wine" is very umami-friendly - match it with dishes featuring mushrooms, onions, aged cheeses, fish in broth, and pasta with egg or even anchovies. Awesome stuff.
2007 Tomero Malbec Gran Reserva, Mendoza, Argentina
List Price: $70.00
Our Price: $45.00
You save $25.00!

For many years we've enjoyed the entire range of wines from Argentine wine maestro Carlos Pulenta.  Best known for his excellent Vistalba wines, he has also been quietly and meticulously cultivating old vines at the Finca Los Alamos vineyard, and in particular, a plot of old-vine Malbec.  The wines from this vineyard he chose to call "Tomero", the name for the farm workers tasked with carefully managing the precious amounts of water for irrigation through a complex system of gates and channels.  Without the help of the Tomeros, these great vineyards wouldn't survive.  That would be a crying shame - because this is a truly impressive bottle of wine.
3124181
From the first moment we tasted this wine, we couldn't help but admire how well Carlos has mastered his craft.  What sorcery was this?  It was as if he'd been hiding amongst the barrels in Napa's top wineries, absorbing their trade secrets and tricks.  Everything we enjoy about our domestic best was present in the wine.

Deep, pure fruit?  Check.
Full body and smooth texture?  Check.
A nice trim of expensive, cocoa-esque oak barrel aging?  Check.
And a lengthy, fruit-driven finish...that, too, was present in this wine.

But we are far more accustomed to this sort of package commanding a Benjamin at least (that's $100 for the uninitiated).

We recommend snapping up this Malbec which is clearly one of the world's best - and the kind of wine that would surprise many of your California-boosting friends.

Regarding tasting notes, we think the IWC said it quite well on this one:

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: 92 points: Saturated bright ruby. Brooding aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet, bitter chocolate, spice oak and graphite. Densely packed and thick but not heavy, with terrific mint and mineral lift to the powerful dark berry flavors. Seriously structured, classically malbec with a very long, slowly mounting finish featuring ripe tannins covered by dark fruits and lovely violet lift.

Sadly, we only have a small supply of this wine - it is in-stock NOW and available for tasting at our wine bar.

We think we've found a special bottle of red
Burgundy from Nuits-Saint-Georges.

On the outside, Domaine Jean Tardy's 2008 Nuits-Saint-Georges "Au bas de Combe" looks unassuming enough. A mid-priced red Burgundy from the northern half of the Cote d'Or, it's not from one of the region's single vineyard Premier Cru sites, so while we expected to enjoy it, we weren't expecting to be floored. But when we took our first sip of this luscious, dense, beautifully-perfumed Pinot Noir, we were instantly hooked. This is serious Burgundy. So what gives?

Au bas de Combe

Well then, that explains it. To the north, we have several of Nuits-Saint-Georges' top Premier Cru vineyards. To the south and east, a mere stone's throw away? That would be Vosne-Romanée, home to the best, most expensive, most ethereal Pinot Noir on the planet.  Bingo, we have a sleeper.

Was $55, now $47,
$43 on a 6pk (coupon code TARDY6),
$40.70/btl on a case (coupon code TARDY12)

The wine has a striking combination of luscious black cherry & wild strawberry, a savory core of black tea tannin, meat, and earth, and accents of cinnamon & red flowers on the nose. This is a very dense & full-bodied Pinot Noir with a finish that goes on and on. No wonder it's flanked by top-tier vineyards on every side—the pedigree here is strong.
The wine is just starting to open up five years after the vintage date and will continue to improve for another decade at least.

The majority of the fruit comes from 60-year-old vines (with a sizeable portion being more than 72-years-old) on the domaine's own property in the heart of Gevrey Chambertin. We recommend decanting for 30-45 minutes to let the wine's aromatics unfold and tannins soften. Only 110 cases are produced per vintage.

We recently spied this wine on the lists of some of our favorite restaurants in the Bay Area, including Gary Danko, Rivoli and Chez Panisse.

Our Tasting Notes

The 2008 Heresztyn Clos Village is a classicly-tuned red Burgundy. It's a deep pomegranate hue in the glass, and offers up scents of red flowers, cinnamon, and black tea. After decanting, the wine's texture softens dramatically, and the unmistakable Pinot flavors of kirsch and raspberry come forward. While we think it makes for great drinking now, it has enough tannin, structure, and fruit to last another decade in the cellar.

An Important Story About the Vintage or:
How we learned to ignore the critics and love 2008 Burgundy

If you look up vintage reports for 2008 Burgundy, you'll see that the broad consensus was that it was an average/below average year, but we feel that 2008 Burgundy was misunderstood from the start. The international wine press typically tastes new vintages in February, largely because airfare to France is so cheap (we're not kidding). Normally wine in barrel has finished fermenting and the critics can get a pretty good sense of what the vintage holds. Not so in 2008.

Due to an unusually cold few weeks in early winter, a great deal of Pinot Noir in Burgundy literally stopped undergoing malolactic fermentation for a month, only to resume again once the weather warmed. In fact, some wine didn't finish fermentation until November 2009. This meant that when the critics descended on Burgundy to taste the 2008s, they were literally tasting unfinished wine. But, hey, gotta get our vintage reports published ahead of the pack, so no need to worry about that.

As a result, a lot of merchants and importers didn't know what to do with 2008 Burgundy when it was released. Pricing was out of whack, and stayed that way for a while.

Today, five years later, people are starting to realize that 2008 was a perfectly fine vintage for Burgundy. That initial uncertainty, however, still resulted in unsold inventory and dramatic price fluctuations. The 2008 Heresztyn Gevrey Chambertin is just one of the first ones we've taken advantage of, but there are sure to be more to follow. Exciting news for all of us who love Burgundy.

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
The NV Brut Premier is a gorgeous wine that stands head and shoulders above the vast majority of wines in its price range.  Apparently it is quite possible to make great Champagne that doesn't cost a small fortune.  Ripe pears, smoke, spices, dried flowers and herbs are some of the many nuances that emerge from the glass.  The Brut Premier shows lovely mid-palate depth and fabulous overall balance.

93 points Wine Advocate: The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is rich, deep and resonant. It shows fabulous depth and richness, with seemingly endless layers of fruit that caress the palate. Dark red cherries, savory herbs, tobacco and licorice linger on the textured, creamy finish. This is another terrific effort from Argiano. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027.

92 points, Wine Spectator: There's density to this red, with richness punctuated by cedar, cherry, balsamic and tobacco flavors. Well-proportioned and delineated, lingering on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2023.

91 points, International Wine Cellar: Good full medium red. Sexy aromas and flavors of plum, mocha, underbrush, spices and tobacco, with a lavender topnote. Smoky, sweet and fine-grained; not yet especially complex but shows lush, sweet, velour-like fruit, noteworthy depth, and good energy for the year. The sappy, smoky finish features some enticing oak spices. Has plenty of tannins for mid-term aging but this is already accessible.

08 Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera 750ml
List Price: $74.00
Our Price: $57.00
You save $17.00!

One of the best under-the-radar producers of great Barolo is Elvio Cogno. Located in the village of Novello, this small property has made some of our favorite Piedmontese wines over the years.  Of his wines, the Ravera vineyard has always been our favorite, and unsurprisingly, is the subject of our offer today.

The 2008 vintage in Piedmont is something of a insider thing.  In Italy, it's extremely highly-regarded; in America, it's not really talked about.

Well, let us change that.  You need 2008 Barolo and Barbaresco in your cellars.  These wines are spectacular and are being discounted already because of the lack of hype.  Stash what you can and reap the rewards down the road.

Aged entirely in large, old oak botte (Cogno uses his French oak barrel staves as fence-building material...), the 2008 Ravera has soaring aromas of roses, ripe strawberry and mint.  It has the texture of a rich Premier Cru Burgundy but with the signature drive of good Nebbiolo.  It's irresistible even this early in it's life.

94+ points, Antonio Galloni
"
The 2008 Barolo Ravera bursts onto the palate with dark red fruit, cherries, mint, licorice and spices. It shows gorgeous fleshiness and depth for the year, with layers of dark red fruit that flow effortlessly to the long, resonant finish. The aromas and flavors meld together seamlessly as the wine sits in the glass. Knock-out floral aromatics linger on the impeccable, elegant finish. In 2008 the estate did not make their top Barolo, the Vigna Elena, because of hail in that site. The best fruit from that site went into the straight Ravera bottling. This is a dazzling effort from Cogno. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. "

"One of the most seductive Pomerols for drinking during its first 10-12 years of life, this 100% Merlot offers copious quantities of sweet black cherries intermixed with licorice, smoke, and earth. Round, velvety-textured, rich, pure, and captivating, it is one of the few 2005s that will be drinkable upon release. It should keep for a decade or more." - Robert Parker

"Rich and generous, this is purely indulgent Merlot. The sweet fruit balances with sweet, almost opulent and well-integrated tannins, and ripe plum flavors. There is some dryness right at the heart of the wine; a pleasure of a wine. " - Wine Enthusiast
*******

Our notes:
The 2005 Certan Marzelle is in a beautiful spot right now - when you think of great Bordeaux, you don't just want great fruit, you want that soul, too.  And Certan Marzelle delivers.  Sumptuous stuff, and its the extra notes of campsmoke, mushroom cap and new leather that take this beautiful 100% Merlot past ordinary and into true-terroir territory.  Put this in your glass when enjoying your favorite hearty winter meal, and don't forget to stash a 6-pack in the cellar - this will only get more seductive with each passing year.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is striking in this vintage, just as it was in 2006. Our notes:

To us, this wine is as good as Cristal.  Seriously.  Made from 100% Chardonnay, this one is like drinking a Montrachet with bubbles.  Rich, broad flavors of lemon curd, stone and aromas of fresh spring white flowers create a beatific impression.  Bottled at a lower pressure than typical, this has a very silky, tender mousse to it that makes you feel like a million bucks.  Do not miss this one!

93 points, Wine Advocate:
White flowers, lemon, and crushed rocks are some of the notes that emerge from Roederer’s 2006 Blanc de Blancs. The 2006 boasts extraordinary elegance and finesse to match its rich, broad-shouldered personality. At the same time, there is plenty of Chardonnay character. Readers who enjoy wines with more tertiary complexity will want to give the 2006 a few years in the cellar, but it is absolutely striking, even today, for its finesse, balance and total sense of harmony. The Blanc de Blancs remains one of the under the radar jewels in the Roederer lineup. In 2006, it is not to be missed. The Blanc de Blancs is made exclusively from grand cru fruit, mostly Avize, Cramant and Mesnil, aged 20% in oak and bottled with four atmospheres of pressure (on the low side) to preserve the elegance of the mousse. All of that worked beautifully here.
