2008 Ijalba "Livor" Organic Rioja, Joven, Spain

Ijalba has always been a wine geek favorite for offbeat stuff like their single varietal Graciano. Now we can’t stop drinking their Joven (young style) Tempranillo from Rioja. Without the essence of oak spice, Tempranillo is allowed to show what it’s really got. Here it’s all about red fruits -- think Pinot Noir or even Carignan with bright mouthwatering fruit underlain with stony depth. This is a bargain organic powered Spanish tinto that doesn’t knock you out with booze - Peter

2009 Soalheiro Alvarinho, Moncao, Vinho Verde, Portugal

100% Alvarinho (The superstar white grape of the Vinho Verde region aka Albariño across the border in Spain. It can make rich, full-bodied and fragrant whites and in Portugal they tend to have a more mineral based structure) Nose of jasmine flower, citrus, and pear. The palate is intense with steely minerality, and lush tropical fruit notes. Dry, medium bodied, with lively acidity, and a long finish. This wine is lean and mineral driven with a focused intensity when young but transforms with gorgeous smoky citrus nuances with a bit of age which it can do for many years to come!

2008 Reinhold Haart Riesling Spaetlese, Wintricher Ohligsberg, Mosel, Germany
Our Price: $45.00 Sale Price: $40.50

The Haart 2008 Wintricher Ohligsberg Riesling Spatlese was harvested late and with a considerable portion of shriveled, botrytized berries. Green tea, mint, and prickly pungency of citrus zest and botrytis spice greet the nose. In the mouth this is bright and penetrating its pungency turning into quite a nippy character which – teamed-up with the wine’s near-severity of acidity – dry-out the finish ever so slightly. Salt, brown spices, and the bitterness of citrus rind really cling, but this impressively concentrated wine is not especially ingratiating, for now at least, and the question one has to ask oneself – given the wild card nature of noble rot and the sumptuous menu of alternatives in this collection – is whether the potential 10-15 year potential of this Riesling is reason enough to cellar some. Certainly it counts as the least vintage-typical of the Haarts’ residually sweet bottlings of 2008.

The slopes of the Greve Valley are indisputably one of Italy's most ideal locations for the cultivation of vineyards and olive groves. The combination of exposure and soil composition contribute to the excellent quality of the wines and the extra virgin olive oils of the area. Named for the river that passes through as it travels from a medieval hilltop town, this area happens to be one of the most important historical centers of the Chianti Classico region. Poggio Scalette takes its name from the landscape which is characterized by dry stone walls that support the terraces on which the vineyards and olive groves are planted. From a distance the impression is of a series of stairs climbing the slopes of Greve. After the death of the previous owner, Poggio Scalette remained abandoned for years until Vittorio Fiore, one of Italy's most famed winemakers, and his wife Adriana discovered the property in 1991. In 1996, 42 additional acres of land became available, enabling them to expand. It was discovered that the plot of land known as “Il Carbonaione” was the first area to be replanted after World War I (1914-1918). This translates into the fact that these vines, more than 90 years old, are a rare example of the original clone of the famous “Sangiovese di Lamole” variety in the Chianti Classico area. Il Carbonaione is the culmination of knowledge and experience and therefore an important message of quality. Vittorio Fiore dedicates this wine to Tuscany and to Sangiovese; the region and the variety that have allowed him to fulfill his aspirations to produce the highest possible level of quality wine.

Oh damn. I L-O-V-E wines like this. They are made of Anti-Fruit, an all-too-rare example of a wine with crazy, “otherly” flavor. Rosehips, tar, violetes, black olive, mushroom and a hint of red cherry - layers on layers of flavors coasting on a voluptuous wine with ready-to-drink richness but the promise of real genius in another 5-8 years. Never understood Barolo’s allure before? That’s about to change...
